Medical Experts Voice Concerns
However, physicians and pharmacists have cautions that the distribution of what remains an unapproved drug in the UK is a cause for concern and could lead to users administering substances of uncertain source.
Several experts said the demand for the experimental drug could be linked to the increasing price of approved slimming products such as Mounjaro.

Marketing retatrutide on social media or messaging apps is prohibited in the UK, as it is an unapproved medication that must not be promoted or distributed for human use under the British medical regulations.
Some influencers try to circumvent the regulations by calling to the substance as a “research chemical” or describing it as “not for human consumption”. Retatrutide is not a controlled drug, but advertising and supply can still breach medicines, marketing, and customer regulations, potentially leading to fines, prosecution or prison.

Research also found communities with up to 9,000 members selling the experimental drug using the platform's built-in discovery tool, which operates like a online catalog. Typing “retatrutide” instantly brings up channels with thousands of members, populated with photos of weight loss, positive reviews and step-by-step instructions for preparing or injecting at home.
Within minutes of joining one community, a vendor posted contact information, where the majority of transactions occur. The vendor sent an guidebook and guaranteed delivery within two days. Platform Oversight and Security Actions
A spokesperson for the messaging service said it actively moderated harmful content on its service including content that encouraged the “misuse of controlled medications”. The organization noted that it removed “millions of pieces of harmful content each day”.
Healthcare Expert Warnings
“Individuals are injecting materials they can’t verify. Even if the research behind retatrutide is sound, these digital products may not include what they advertise,” said a pharmacy expert, the director of pharmacy at a pharmacy service.
Dr Crystal Wyllie of an online medical service linked the increase in demand to recent cost increases for approved slimming drugs such as Mounjaro. “With costs increasing, individuals are using social media. But fake injections are extremely dangerous. You cannot know what’s inside or whether the environment they were produced in was sterile,” she explained.
Her team has previously seen individuals harmed by personal administration from unconfirmed suppliers. “We understand the frustration, but purchasing from Telegram or WhatsApp is gambling with your well-being,” stated the doctor. “These materials could be contaminated or improperly measured.”
Producer Position
A representative from the pharmaceutical company said the substance was in phase 3 clinical trials and had not been reviewed or approved by any government authority globally. “Therefore at this point no one can market [it] for personal consumption,” they said, adding that any product “falsely representing itself as a Lilly investigational product not yet authorized … may subject patients to possibly significant medical dangers”.
